A new multi-year study reported by PsychCentral states that most psychiatric disorders do not predict future violent behavior. Exceptions to this finding are people with a history of substance abuse and dependence, as well as some delinquent youth with a current psychiatric illness. Delinquent youth with psychiatric illness often experience multiple risk factors which increase the likelihood of violent behavior and worsen psychiatric symptoms. The study notes that comprehensive treatment is the best defense against violent behavior and has the potential to reduce violence in people with psychiatric disorders.
