Adults who have been diagnosed with ADHD are significantly more likely to have been sexually and physically abused prior to reaching age 16, reports an article in MNT. When compared to women who had not been diagnosed with ADHD,the number of women with the disorder who reported childhood sexual abuse was more than double. The article also notes that a greater number of men also report experiencing sexual or physical abuse during childhood. The data does not inform us as to whether people who have ADHD may be more vulnerable to abuse, or whether childhood sexual abuse may be a causal factor in the development ADHD. It does, however, tell us that it is important for clinicians and health professional to screen for past abuse when working with people who have been diagnosed with ADHD.
