The British Psychological Society has released a new report questioning the current view of schizophrenia and psychosis. Many people consider schizophrenia to a frightening disorder where the person is unpredictable, potentially violent, and only treatable with medication. This new report finds that this view is false and that psychosis should be thought of in the same way as other psychological problems, such as anxiety or shyness. This report questions traditionally held ideas about schizophrenia and suggests that families and treatment providers respect schizophrenia as an aspect of the person’s personality and try to work out what may be causing an increase in symptoms by sitting and talking with the individual.
