The mission of the Post-Doctoral Residency Program of The Arroyos Treatment Centers is to train postdoctoral residents, interested in developing advanced expertise in the treatment of serious mental disorders and co-occurring substance abuse, for careers in private practice in the Los Angeles area. The Residency is designed to prepare clinicians to competently treat this patient group in an interdisciplinary treatment model at multiple levels of care. Residents are further strongly encouraged to develop subspecialty areas within this broad-based population.
Residents work at The Arroyos Treatment Centers, a mental health treatment company specializing in comprehensive care. The Arroyos Treatment Centers operates two training facilities in Pasadena – The Arroyos Outpatient Treatment Center and The Arroyos Residential Treatment Center (opening in Summer 2016. The Arroyos Treatment Centers is a Postdoctoral Member Agency of the California Psychology Internship Council (CAPIC). CAPIC Postdoctoral Member Agencies are recognized by the California Board of Psychology (BoP) for the accrual of Supervised Professional Experience (SPE) hours toward licensure as a psychologist.
Our residents receive intensive training and experience in the assessment and treatment of severe mental disorders such as bipolar disorder, major depression, schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia, severe anxiety disorders, and co-occurring chemical dependency. Residents are actively involved in ongoing program development. Residents learn procedures onsite for crisis clinical evaluations, 5150 involuntary holds to hospitals, and evaluations for LPS conservatorships.
Residents have primary responsibility for direct patient care by providing individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy, psychological testing and assessment. Residents learn the integration of clinical psychopharmacology with the practice of clinical psychology throughout the residency experience. Residents serve as case managers and learn procedures for out-of-network insurance billing, processing, and utilization review. Our doctors are on staff at two local hospitals and residents will gain understanding of the interface between our practice settings and inpatient psychiatric, chemical dependency, and medical-surgical hospital settings.
Residents are supervised in individual, group, seminar, case conference, and co-therapy formats by members of our own integrated team of clinical psychologists and guest consulting psychiatrists. They have the opportunity to train in a variety of theoretical approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapy, interpersonal therapy, interpersonal and social rhythm therapy, family systems therapy, psychopharmacology, crisis management, psychiatric case management, and other clinical perspectives.
The Post-Doctoral Residency accepts applications from graduates who are eligible to receive postdoctoral hours by the California Board of Psychology; at a minimum having completed all of their requirements to receive their Ph.D. or Psy.D. Degree in Clinical Psychology from an APA (American Psychological Association) Accredited Institution. Applicants must have completed a year-long, full time, APA, AAPIC, or CAPIC approved pre-doctoral internship in Clinical Psychology prior to beginning the Residency. The applicant’s internship must have been at a site that provided 12 months of supervised experience treating seriously mentally ill individuals in an inpatient hospital setting.
