As reported by, researchers at Columbia University have found that patients with moderate to severe pain were 41% more like to develop prescription opioid use disorders than patients without severe pain. This study examined 34,000 patients making results generalizable. The association between increased use of prescription pain medications by patients with moderate to severe pain was not affected by factors such as age, sex, family history of drug use, and presence of psychological disorders such as anxiety.
