The fundamental mission of The Arroyos is to provide the best interdisciplinary care possible to patients and their families who are coping with a serious mental disorder. Our clinicians and staff are committed to empower our patients to live the best possible quality of life, a quality of life that they and their families may not have thought possible to achieve. We do this through helping you:

It is impossible to provide comprehensive care for patients with serious psychological disorders without also addressing co-occurring substance disorders. Adults with serious mental disorders are at high risk to develop substance use disorders as a complication of their primary mental illness. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), approximately 35% of adults aged 18-35 with a primary serious mental illness have a co-occurring substance use disorder.*

A serious psychological disorder is defined by The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) as a “serious mental illness.” DHHS considers an individual to have serious mental illness if they have a “diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder that causes serious functional impairment that substantially interferes with one or more major life activities”. The most commonly identified serious mental disorders are major depression, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, and schizophrenia, but may also include other mental disorders that result in suicidal thoughts or actions, lack a productive role, or serious impairment in their main productive role due to their mental health (e.g. missing at least one full day per month because of their mental illness), or serious interpersonal impairment (e.g. social isolation, lack of social intimacy, lack of social support).

Serious psychological disorders (or serious mental illnesses) can include diagnoses such as:

  • Major Depressive Disorder
  • Bipolar I Disorder
  • Bipolar II Disorder
  • Persistent Depressive Disorder
  • Social Anxiety Disorder
  • Panic Disorder
  • Cyclothymic Disorder
  • Schizoaffective Disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Agoraphobia
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder
  • Hoarding Disorder
